Introduction

Dog care is the second pet system in Heartopia, unlocked after completing the Cat Care introductory questline. Once a player has successfully adopted and cared for their first cat for at least seven in-game days, Mrs. Joan introduces them to her colleague Mr. Parker, who runs the Heartopia Dog Shelter on the west side of town. Mr. Parker serves as the mentor for all dog-related activities, providing quests, training tips, and access to the daily dog adoption roster.

Dogs in Heartopia differ from cats in several important ways. While cats are primarily indoor companions, dogs thrive on outdoor activity and require daily walks to stay happy and healthy. The walking system is a central part of dog ownership, offering exploration opportunities, random events, and bonding moments that cannot be experienced with cats. Dogs also respond more visibly to their owner's actions, wagging their tails, barking with excitement, or whimpering when their needs are unmet.

There are 11 dog breeds available in Heartopia, each with unique size, appearance, personality, and walking behavior. Unlike the cat system, there are no rare event-exclusive breeds -- all 11 dogs can be adopted through the regular shelter rotation.

Breed Notes

Small breeds (Corgi, Shiba Inu) consume less food and require shorter walks but may become restless indoors if not given enough play time. Medium breeds (Beagle, Rural Dog, Poodle) offer a balanced experience suitable for most players. Large breeds (Golden Retriever, Labrador, Rottweiler, Shepherd Dog, Sled Dog, Dalmatian) need more food and longer walks but tend to have higher affection ceilings and unlock more walking events.

The Rural Dog is a mixed-breed option unique to Heartopia. It has no fixed appearance -- each Rural Dog is randomly generated with a combination of coat colors and patterns, making every one visually distinct.

Adoption Process

Shelter Visits

The Dog Shelter operates from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM in game time, the same hours as the Cat Shelter. Each day, three dogs are available for adoption. The breed roster rotates daily, drawn randomly from all 11 breeds with equal probability.

Adoption Requirements

To adopt a dog, the player must meet the following conditions:

  • Completed the Cat Care introductory quest (mandatory prerequisite).
  • Own a Dog Bed, purchasable from the pet supply shop for 250 Heart Coins.
  • Have a fenced yard or Outdoor Pet Area placed on their property. Dogs cannot be adopted without an outdoor space.

Adoption Fees

SizeAdoption Fee
Small600 Heart Coins
Medium750 Heart Coins
Large900 Heart Coins

Adoption Limits

Players may own up to two dogs at a time. Combined with the three-cat limit, a player can have a maximum of five pets in their household simultaneously. Rehoming a dog follows the same process as cats -- Mr. Parker handles the transfer, and the rehomed dog can be visited at its new family's home.

Daily Care and Walking

Feeding

Dogs eat twice per day, morning and evening. Their food options are similar to the cat system but with dog-specific items:

FoodCostSatisfactionSource
Basic Dog Food15 CoinsLowGeneral Store
Premium Dog Kibble30 CoinsMediumPet Supply Shop
Homemade Meat Stew50 CoinsHighCooking (requires recipe)
Deluxe Bone-In Roast80 CoinsVery HighCooking (requires recipe)

Large breeds consume roughly 50% more food per meal than small breeds. This does not affect the cost per feeding but does influence how quickly the hunger meter depletes between meals.

Petting and Grooming

Dogs can be petted up to five times per day, similar to cats. Additionally, dogs require grooming once every two days. Grooming involves brushing, which is a simple one-click action, and keeps the dog's coat clean and healthy. Breeds with longer fur, such as the Golden Retriever and Poodle, show more visible improvement from grooming.

Walking

Walking is the defining feature of dog ownership in Heartopia. Each dog requires at least one walk per day to maintain its happiness. Walks take place on designated walking routes throughout Heartopia, and the player controls the pace and direction.

Walk Duration

The required walk duration depends on the dog's energy level:

Energy LevelMinimum Walk TimeRecommended Walk Time
Low3 minutes5 minutes
Medium5 minutes8 minutes
High7 minutes10 minutes
Very High10 minutes15 minutes

Walk times are measured in real-world minutes. Ending a walk before the minimum time provides only partial satisfaction to the walk meter.

Walking Routes

There are five walking routes available in Heartopia, each offering different scenery and random events:

  • Town Loop -- A short, easy route through the town center. Suitable for low-energy breeds and quick daily walks.
  • Park Trail -- A medium-length route through Heartopia Park with trees, benches, and a pond. Other dog walkers appear here for social interactions.
  • Riverside Path -- A scenic route along the river. Dogs may chase butterflies, splash in shallow water, or discover hidden items along the bank.
  • Forest Circuit -- A longer route through the Maple Forest. Dogs with high curiosity may sniff out buried treasures or spot wildlife.
  • Mountain Pass -- The longest and most demanding route, available after unlocking the mountain area. Only recommended for high-energy large breeds. Completing this route grants bonus affection.

Walking Events

During walks, random events may occur that test the player's response:

  • Other Dogs -- The player's dog may encounter another dog walker. Friendly dogs play together, while protective dogs may bark. The player can choose to let them interact or continue walking.
  • Fetch Opportunity -- A stick or ball appears on the path. Throwing it triggers a short fetch mini-game that greatly boosts the dog's mood.
  • Obstacle -- A fallen branch or puddle blocks the path. The player can command the dog to jump over it or go around. Successful jumps build the dog's confidence stat.
  • Lost Item -- The dog sniffs out a buried or hidden item, which is added to the player's inventory. Items range from common crafting materials to rare decorative objects.
  • Rain Shower -- Sudden rain begins during the walk. The player can continue walking for a small affection bonus or head home. Some breeds, like the Sled Dog, enjoy rain and receive extra happiness.

Playing

Indoor play sessions work similarly to the cat system. Dogs respond to a different set of toys:

  • Tennis Ball -- Appeals to energetic and playful dogs.
  • Rope Tug -- Appeals to brave and strong dogs.
  • Squeaky Toy -- Appeals to curious and friendly dogs.
  • Frisbee -- Can only be used outdoors, appeals to fast and obedient dogs.

Personality Traits

Each dog has two personality traits that influence its behavior at home, on walks, and around other animals. Breed tendencies are listed in the breed table, but individual variation exists.

Trait Descriptions

  • Cheerful -- Wags tail frequently, greets the player enthusiastically at the door.
  • Stubborn -- Occasionally resists commands during walks, requires extra patience.
  • Independent -- Entertains itself at home, lower attention demands.
  • Alert -- Barks at visitors and unusual sounds, reacts to in-game events.
  • Friendly -- Gets along with all other pets and visiting NPCs.
  • Curious -- Sniffs everything on walks, higher chance of finding hidden items.
  • Gentle -- Careful around smaller animals and children NPCs.
  • Obedient -- Responds quickly to commands, easier to train.
  • Energetic -- Needs more activity, higher walk and play requirements.
  • Loyal -- Follows the player closely, waits by the door when the player is away.
  • Brave -- Does not flee from obstacles or loud sounds during walks.
  • Protective -- Guards the home, barks at unfamiliar NPCs approaching the property.
  • Clever -- Learns tricks faster, unlocks bonus trick animations.
  • Playful -- Initiates play on its own, brings toys to the player.
  • Tough -- Tolerates bad weather on walks without mood penalties.
  • Hardy -- Slower hunger and grooming meter depletion.
  • Calm -- Relaxed at home, rarely barks, good for multi-pet households.
  • Elegant -- Prances during walks, has unique groomed appearance animations.

Training

Dogs can learn up to four tricks through the training system, accessible from Mr. Parker's shelter. Training requires repeated practice sessions over several in-game days. Available tricks include Sit, Shake, Roll Over, Spin, Lie Down, and High Five. Obedient and clever dogs learn tricks in fewer sessions. Trained tricks can be performed on command at home or during walks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs and cats live together?

Yes. Dogs and cats share the same home and interact based on their personality traits. A gentle, calm dog paired with a bold cat typically coexists peacefully from day one. More energetic dogs may initially startle shy cats, but compatibility improves over time as the animals build familiarity. After approximately five in-game days of cohabitation, most dog-cat pairs settle into a comfortable relationship.

What happens if the walk meter stays empty?

If a dog does not receive a walk for two consecutive in-game days, it enters a Restless state, pacing around the house and whining. After four days without a walk, the dog becomes Unhappy, and its affection meter begins to decline. Mr. Parker sends a reminder letter after three missed walk days. Prolonged neglect follows the same escalation path as cats, with the dog eventually being rehomed by the shelter after seven days of total neglect.

Is there a best breed for beginners?

The Golden Retriever is widely considered the most beginner-friendly breed. It has a gentle and obedient personality, moderate walk requirements relative to its size, and high affection potential. The Corgi is another strong choice for players who prefer a smaller dog with lower food costs and shorter walk times.

Can two dogs be walked at the same time?

Yes. If a player owns two dogs, both can be taken on a walk simultaneously. Dual walks are slightly more challenging, as each dog may react independently to walking events, but they also generate unique bonding moments between the two dogs. Completing a dual walk counts toward both dogs' daily walk requirements.
