Introduction
Cat care is one of the core pet systems in Heartopia, unlocked at Daily Goal Level 12 (DG12). Upon reaching this milestone, players receive an invitation from Mrs. Joan, the kind-hearted owner of the Heartopia Cat Shelter, who introduces the adoption system and teaches the basics of feline companionship. Mrs. Joan serves as the ongoing mentor for all cat-related activities, offering quests, care tips, and access to rare breed adoption events throughout the game.
Cats in Heartopia are more than decorative companions. They have distinct personalities, daily needs, and emotional states that respond to how well they are treated. A well-cared-for cat rewards its owner with affection, unique interactions, and collectible Cat Moments -- special snapshots that document memorable events in the cat's life. Neglected cats become withdrawn and may eventually run away if their needs are ignored for too long.
There are 14 cat breeds available in Heartopia, each with unique appearance, personality tendencies, and rarity. Two of these breeds are classified as rare and require special conditions to adopt. Building a bond with a cat takes time and consistent attention, making cat care a rewarding long-term activity.

Rare Breeds
The Panda Cat and Golden Spotted breeds cannot be adopted through the regular shelter. They appear only during limited-time Rare Breed Adoption Events, which Mrs. Joan announces approximately once per in-game season. During these events, players must complete a short questline to prove they are experienced cat owners before being allowed to adopt. Having at least one cat with maximum affection is typically a prerequisite.
Adoption Process
Visiting the Shelter
The Cat Shelter is located on the east side of Heartopia Town. It is open every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM in game time. Each day, the shelter displays three cats available for adoption. The available cats rotate daily, and their breeds are randomized from the non-rare pool.
Choosing a Cat
Players can interact with each available cat before deciding. Interacting reveals the cat's breed, a preview of its personality traits, and its current mood. First impressions matter -- some cats warm up to the player immediately, while others may take a few visits before they are comfortable being adopted.
Adoption Fee and Requirements
Adopting a cat costs 500 Heart Coins for common breeds and 800 Heart Coins for uncommon breeds. Players must also have a Cat Bed placed in their home before the adoption can be finalized. Cat Beds can be purchased from the furniture shop for 200 Heart Coins.
Adoption Limits
Players can own up to three cats at a time. Adopting a fourth cat requires finding a new home for one of the existing cats through the Rehoming option at the shelter. Rehomed cats can be visited at their new families' homes around town.
Daily Care Routine
Cats in Heartopia have four daily care needs: feeding, petting, bathing, and playing. Each action fills a corresponding need meter, and keeping all four meters above 50% maintains the cat's happiness level.
Feeding
Cats must be fed twice per day -- once in the morning and once in the evening. The type of food affects satisfaction:
| Food | Cost | Satisfaction | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Kibble | 10 Coins | Low | General Store |
| Premium Cat Food | 25 Coins | Medium | Pet Supply Shop |
| Fresh Fish Meal | 40 Coins | High | Cooking (requires recipe) |
| Gourmet Tuna Platter | 60 Coins | Very High | Cooking (requires recipe) |
Feeding a cat its preferred food type, which varies by breed, grants a bonus to satisfaction. For example, the Siamese has a strong preference for Fresh Fish Meal, while the Orange Tabby is content with almost anything.
Petting
Petting is a simple interaction that can be performed up to five times per day. Each petting session raises the affection meter slightly. Cats with higher affection levels unlock new petting animations and may purr or nuzzle the player in response.
Bathing
Cats need a bath once every three days. Bathing requires a Cat Bath Tub, which can be purchased from the pet supply shop. Some cats dislike baths and may resist, requiring the player to complete a short mini-game to finish the bathing process. Cats that enjoy water, such as the Raccoon Cat, are easier to bathe.
Playing
Playing with a cat requires a toy item in the player's inventory. Different toys appeal to different personality types:
- Feather Wand -- Appeals to playful and energetic cats.
- Laser Pointer -- Appeals to curious and clever cats.
- Yarn Ball -- Appeals to calm and gentle cats.
- Crinkle Mouse -- Appeals to mischievous and bold cats.
Each play session lasts about two minutes in real time and fills the play meter significantly. Playing is also the fastest way to build affection with a new cat.
Personality Traits
Every cat in Heartopia has two personality traits drawn from a pool of possible characteristics. While breeds have tendencies toward certain traits (as listed in the breed table), individual cats may vary. Personality traits affect how a cat behaves in the home, which toys it prefers, and how it interacts with other cats and visitors.
Trait Effects
- Affectionate -- Seeks out the player more often, easier to pet.
- Independent -- Spends more time alone, less frequent interaction prompts.
- Playful -- Higher play need, enjoys longer play sessions.
- Calm -- Lower play need, prefers quiet environments.
- Curious -- Explores new furniture and items placed in the home.
- Shy -- Takes longer to warm up, hides when visitors arrive.
- Vocal -- Meows frequently, reacts audibly to events.
- Mischievous -- Occasionally knocks items off shelves (cosmetic only).
- Lazy -- Sleeps more often, lower energy levels.
- Loyal -- Follows the player around the house more closely.
- Bold -- Approaches strangers and other pets without hesitation.
- Gentle -- Gets along well with all other cats.
Multi-Cat Households
When multiple cats share a home, their personalities interact. Compatible cats groom each other, sleep together, and play together, which generates special dual Cat Moments. Incompatible cats may hiss at each other or compete for the player's attention, though they never fight or injure one another.
Cat Moments
Cat Moments are collectible snapshots that automatically trigger when a cat performs a special action or reaches a relationship milestone. Each breed has a unique set of 10 Cat Moments to collect, for a total of 140 across all 14 breeds.
Examples of Cat Moments include:
- First Purr -- The cat purrs for the first time after reaching medium affection.
- Window Watcher -- The cat sits on a windowsill and watches birds outside.
- Box Explorer -- The cat climbs into a cardboard box placed in the home.
- Midnight Zoomies -- The cat runs around the house at night.
- Lap Nap -- The cat falls asleep on the player's lap during a sit animation.
Collecting all 10 Cat Moments for a single breed unlocks a Commemorative Photo Frame of that cat for display in the home. Collecting all 140 Cat Moments across every breed unlocks the Ultimate Cat Lover title and a special Cat Paradise room theme.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can cats go outside?
Cats are primarily indoor pets in Heartopia. However, players can craft a Cat Leash to take their cat on short outdoor walks around the neighborhood. Outdoor walks do not fill any care meters but may trigger unique outdoor Cat Moments.
What happens if a cat's needs are neglected?
If any care meter drops to zero for more than two consecutive in-game days, the cat enters a Sad state, indicated by a rain cloud icon above its head. If all meters remain at zero for five consecutive days, Mrs. Joan arrives with a warning letter. After seven days of total neglect, the cat is automatically rehomed by the shelter. Players can prevent this at any point by resuming care.
Can cats interact with dogs?
Yes. If a player also owns a dog (unlocked through the Dog Care system), cats and dogs can interact in the home. Their compatibility depends on both animals' personality traits. Calm dogs and bold cats tend to get along well, while energetic dogs may startle shy cats. Over time, even initially wary pairs can become friends.
How do rare breed events work?
Mrs. Joan announces rare breed events via an in-game mail notification approximately once per season. The event lasts three in-game days. During this window, players must complete a short series of care-themed tasks -- such as cooking a special meal, crafting a luxury cat bed, or achieving maximum affection with a current cat -- to qualify for the rare adoption. Only one rare cat can be adopted per event.
