Introduction to Bug Catching

Bug catching is one of the exploration-focused hobbies in Heartopia, becoming available once players reach Dream Guide (DG) Level 5. At that point, Naniwa, the eccentric entomologist who lives on the outskirts of Cloverdale, sends the player an invitation to visit her workshop. She introduces the hobby, hands over the first bubble net, and teaches the basics of insect collection.

Unlike fishing or foraging, bug catching requires players to actively track and approach creatures in the wild. Insects appear throughout the overworld in specific locations, during particular times of day, and sometimes only under certain weather conditions. This makes bug catching one of the more engaging hobbies, rewarding players who pay attention to their surroundings and plan their outings around the clock and calendar.

Collected insects serve multiple purposes. They can be sold for gold, donated to the Cloverdale Museum to complete the entomology exhibit, displayed in a personal vivarium on the homestead, or gifted to certain NPCs who have a fondness for specific species. Completing the full insect collection is also required for the "Master Entomologist" achievement, one of the rarest achievements in the game.

There are over 40 distinct insect species spread across all four seasons in Heartopia. Each species has its own rarity tier, sell price, and specific conditions under which it appears.

How Bug Catching Works

Bug catching in Heartopia follows a simple but skill-based loop that rewards patience and timing.

The Bubble Net. The primary tool for catching insects is the bubble net, a specialized net that encases bugs in a harmless bubble upon capture. Naniwa provides the basic bubble net for free during the introductory quest. Upgraded versions become available at higher bug catching levels: the Silver Bubble Net at Level 8 (wider catch radius), the Gold Bubble Net at Level 14 (even wider radius plus silent approach), and the Prismatic Bubble Net at Level 20 (maximum radius, silent approach, and a slight slowdown effect on nearby insects).

Spotting Insects. Insects appear as small animated creatures on the overworld map. Butterflies flutter above flower patches, beetles crawl on tree trunks, fireflies glow near water at night, and crickets hop through tall grass. Each species has a distinct visual appearance and sound cue. Players who turn up their audio volume will often hear an insect before seeing it.

Approaching. Most insects are skittish and will flee if the player runs toward them. The correct approach is to walk slowly by holding the sneak button. The Gold and Prismatic bubble nets eliminate the need to sneak, as they have a built-in silent approach feature. If an insect detects the player and begins to flee, it will disappear after approximately three seconds.

The Catch. Once within range, pressing the action button swings the bubble net. If the net connects with the insect, it is captured instantly and placed in the inventory. Missed swings cause the insect to flee immediately. Timing and positioning are the two factors that determine success. Approaching from behind an insect provides a slightly larger catch window.

Bug Catching Experience. Every successful catch grants experience toward the bug catching skill. Rarer insects grant significantly more experience. Leveling up unlocks better nets, new insect species, and access to the vivarium.

Best Bug Catching Spots

Each region in Heartopia hosts a different population of insects. Planning outings around specific areas maximizes catching efficiency.

Sunflower Meadow. The best starting location for new bug catchers. Common Butterflies, Painted Butterflies, Ladybugs, Field Crickets, Honeybees, and Bumblebees all appear here during daytime in clear weather. This area provides a consistent supply of common insects for selling and skill leveling.

Cloverdale Gardens. Located adjacent to the town center, the gardens are home to Monarch Butterflies, Golden Ladybugs, and Bumblebees. The Golden Ladybug appears only during morning hours and is worth watching for, as it sells for 220 gold.

Whispering Woods. A dense forest area that becomes active at night. Rhinoceros Beetles, Stag Beetles (during fall), Praying Mantises during the day, and Atlas Moths at night can all be found here. The Ghost Butterfly appears in the deepest section of the woods during foggy nights and is one of the most sought-after catches in the game.

Moonshine Lake. The lakeside environment attracts Fireflies at night, Emperor Dragonflies during the afternoon, Luna Moths on clear nights, and Giant Water Striders on foggy mornings. This location is particularly productive during summer nights when Fireflies and Luna Moths appear simultaneously.

Enchanted Forest. Unlocked after completing the main story quest "The Hidden Path," this magical forest contains some of the rarest insects in the game. Sapphire Butterflies, Rainbow Fireflies, Orchid Mantises, Phantom Moths, and Emerald Cicadas all call this area home. The Enchanted Forest is the single best location for rare and very rare insects.

Coral Coast. The coastal area is home to the Jewel Beetle, which crawls along driftwood and rock formations during clear daytime hours. While only one insect species spawns here, the Jewel Beetle's 340 gold sell price makes dedicated trips worthwhile.

Starfall Bay. The endgame bug catching location. The Crystal Dragonfly appears here after rainstorms, and two legendary insects -- the Starlight Beetle and the Aurora Moth -- can only be found at Starfall Bay. The Aurora Moth is the rarest insect in the game, appearing exclusively during the Northern Lights weather event on clear nights.

Crystal Caverns Entrance. The cave entrance area hosts Glowworms and the elusive Golden Beetle at night. Players cannot catch insects inside the caverns themselves, only in the open-air entrance area.

Insects by Season and Weather

Many insects in Heartopia are tied to specific seasons and weather conditions. Understanding these patterns is essential for completing the full collection.

Spring Exclusives. Monarch Butterflies are most abundant in spring, though they also appear in summer. Honeybees reach their peak spawn rate during spring in Sunflower Meadow.

Summer Exclusives. Fireflies and Rainbow Fireflies reach their highest spawn density during summer nights. The Emerald Cicada appears only during summer afternoons in the Enchanted Forest. Summer is generally the most productive season for bug catching due to longer daylight hours and warmer weather spawning more species.

Fall Exclusives. The Bell Cricket and Evening Cicada are fall-only insects found in Autumn Grove. Stag Beetles also appear exclusively during fall nights in the Whispering Woods. The Autumn Grove becomes the primary hunting ground during this season.

Winter. Most insects become dormant during winter, and outdoor catching opportunities are significantly reduced. However, Glowworms at the Crystal Caverns Entrance remain active year-round, and the Starlight Beetle at Starfall Bay actually has a higher spawn rate during clear winter nights due to reduced light competition.

Rain-Only Insects. The Crystal Dragonfly at Starfall Bay appears only during the period immediately following a rainstorm (within the first two in-game hours after rain stops). Players who want this insect should watch the weather forecast from the home television and head to Starfall Bay as soon as rain begins to clear.

Fog-Only Insects. Three highly valuable insects require foggy conditions: the Ghost Butterfly (Whispering Woods), the Phantom Moth (Enchanted Forest), and the Giant Water Strider (Moonshine Lake). Fog occurs randomly but is most common during fall mornings and spring evenings. Checking the weather forecast daily helps players plan for foggy outings.

Night-Only Insects. A significant portion of the collection can only be caught at night (after 8:00 PM in-game time). Fireflies, Luna Moths, Atlas Moths, Phantom Moths, Rhinoceros Beetles, Stag Beetles, Golden Beetles, Glowworms, the Starlight Beetle, and the Aurora Moth are all nocturnal. Night catching trips are essential for any serious collector.

Vivarium Display

At Bug Catching Level 10, Naniwa rewards the player with a vivarium blueprint. The vivarium is a large glass-enclosed habitat that can be built on the homestead, allowing players to display up to 20 caught insects in a naturalistic environment.

Building the Vivarium. Constructing the vivarium requires 30 Hardwood, 20 Glass Panes, and 10 Iron Bars. These materials can be gathered through woodcutting, purchased from the general store (glass panes), and smelted from iron ore found in the Crystal Caverns. Once built, the vivarium appears as a beautiful terrarium structure on the homestead.

Placing Insects. Interacting with the vivarium opens the display interface. Players can select any caught insect from their inventory or storage and place it inside. Each insect displays its natural behavior within the vivarium: butterflies flutter, beetles crawl, fireflies glow, and crickets produce ambient sounds.

Vivarium Themes. At Bug Catching Level 15, players unlock the ability to change the vivarium's interior theme. Available themes include Forest Floor, Meadow Garden, Lakeside, and Tropical. Different themes complement different insect types visually, though the choice is purely cosmetic.

Visitor Reactions. NPCs who visit the homestead will comment on the vivarium and react positively to rare insects on display. Displaying legendary insects like the Starlight Beetle or Aurora Moth triggers unique dialogue from visiting characters and increases friendship points with nature-loving NPCs such as Naniwa, Willow, and Finn.

Bug Catching Tips

Walk, do not run. The most common mistake new players make is running toward insects. Always hold the sneak button when approaching. The slow walk speed feels tedious at first but becomes second nature quickly.

Approach from behind. Insects have a forward-facing detection cone. Circling around to approach from behind gives the player a wider catch window and reduces the chance of spooking the target.

Upgrade the net as soon as possible. The basic bubble net has a small catch radius that makes catching fast-moving insects like dragonflies and butterflies frustrating. The Silver Bubble Net at Level 8 makes a dramatic difference in catch rates and should be prioritized.

Use the weather forecast. The television in the player's home displays a three-day weather forecast. Planning bug catching trips around incoming fog or rain events allows efficient targeting of weather-exclusive species.

Visit Naniwa weekly. Every Monday, Naniwa updates her "Insect of the Week" board. Catching and delivering the featured insect awards triple experience and a bonus friendship point. This is the fastest way to level up the bug catching skill.

Listen for audio cues. Many insects produce distinct sounds before they are visible on screen. Crickets chirp, cicadas buzz, and beetles produce a low clicking sound. Playing with headphones helps detect nearby insects that might otherwise be missed.

Stock up on insect repellent. Purchasable from the general store, insect repellent prevents common insects from spawning for 30 minutes, which increases the spawn rate of uncommon and rare species in the same area. This is useful when hunting specific rare targets.

Carry a lantern at night. Equipping a lantern illuminates a wider area, making it easier to spot nocturnal insects. The upgraded Crystal Lantern (obtained from a Crystal Caverns quest) attracts moths and fireflies, increasing their spawn rate within its light radius.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does bug catching unlock? Bug catching unlocks at Dream Guide Level 5. Upon reaching this level, Naniwa sends a letter to the player's mailbox inviting them to her workshop. Completing the introductory quest grants the basic bubble net and the first three entries in the insect encyclopedia.

What happens if an insect escapes? If a player misses a swing or spooks an insect, it flies or crawls away and disappears after about three seconds. The same species will respawn in the same general area after a short cooldown period (approximately five in-game minutes). Rare and legendary insects have longer cooldown periods of up to one in-game hour.

Can insects be caught in the rain? Most insects do not appear during active rainfall. However, the Crystal Dragonfly specifically spawns during the window immediately after rain stops. Some common insects like Water Striders remain active regardless of weather. Players should generally wait for rain to pass before beginning a catching session, unless specifically targeting post-rain species.

How do players complete the full insect collection? Completing the full collection requires catching at least one of every species across all four seasons, multiple weather conditions, and both day and night cycles. The most challenging catches are the two legendary insects: the Starlight Beetle (clear winter nights at Starfall Bay) and the Aurora Moth (Northern Lights event at Starfall Bay). The Northern Lights event occurs randomly during winter and is announced by a special notification. Players aiming for full completion should keep the Prismatic Bubble Net equipped and fast-travel to Starfall Bay immediately when the event triggers.
